Get through to HMRC (Self Assessment) without the hold queue
The Self Assessment helpline is for sole traders, landlords and anyone else who files a return. Penalties, payments on account and registration questions all go through here, and in January the queue can run to an hour.
HMRC (Self Assessment) customer service
0300 200 3310- Opening hours
- Mon to Fri 8am to 6pm, closed bank holidays
- When you ring
- Speech recognition asks why you're calling. Expect to be asked for your UTR and National Insurance number.
- Worth knowing
- Busiest in the weeks before 31 January. HMRC sometimes restricts this line in peak periods, so check gov.uk before calling.

What HoldMyCall does on a HMRC (Self Assessment) call
- 1
Dials and waits
It rings 0300 200 3310, works through the menu and sits in the queue, however long it takes. You get on with your day.
- 2
Has the conversation
It introduces itself as an AI assistant calling on your behalf, gives the details you provided when asked, and pushes politely for the outcome you wanted.
- 3
Reports back
A summary, whether it got what you asked for, any reference numbers, and the full transcript and recording. If they insist on speaking to you, your phone rings and one keypress joins the live call.
Things people ask it to sort with HMRC (Self Assessment)
Appeal a late filing penalty
“I've received a £100 late filing penalty but I don't think I needed to file a return that year. Find out how to appeal and whether the return can be withdrawn.”
Check a payment has arrived
“I paid my Self Assessment bill by bank transfer ten days ago and my account still shows it as outstanding. Confirm the payment has been received and allocated.”
Reduce payments on account
“My income has dropped this year. Find out how to reduce my payments on account and what evidence is needed.”
Have these ready
Whether you ring or the assistant does, HMRC (Self Assessment) will want some of these before they will talk about your account.
- Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)
- National Insurance number
- Details of the return, payment or penalty you're asking about
Save them once in Settings and every call starts with them filled in. The assistant only gives a detail when it is asked for it, and it is hard-coded to refuse payments and contract changes.
